In Praise of Body Workers

bodywork massage health wellness

Anyone who has ever had a tired or achy muscle calmed down by a knowledgeable body worker you know the magic of the moment I’m talking about. The feeling of relief from a massage therapist’s hands is absolute bliss. The ability to move free from pain and discomfort is no small feat of accomplishment.

Having utilized the services of various incredible individuals over the years I still feel it is often a field that gets little praise. These individuals work tirelessly to knead their hands in our gnarly bodies day in and day out. We call on them in desperation and they always come to the rescue.

It’s a relationship of sharing vulnerabilities and trust. When you find such an individual it’s like a long last friend who knows all your weaknesses as well as strengths. You share an unspoken level of friendship that is hard to be filled by another.

As in everything in life you never completely understand this partnership until of course it is gone. All the more reason to reflect and admire individuals who dedicate their lives to healing our physical and mental needs.

I think in our rush to be impressed by technology and gadgets we forget about fields that are physical. Maybe because body workers labor alone or behind the scenes we overlook their diligence? Or because we feel uneasy about our own vulnerabilities and remain quiet about the intense work therapists do? Reasons are plentiful.

I mention this because I feel encouraging young people into such fields serves a vital purpose in building healthy bodies but also strong communities. It should be an admired profession, one of course that demands training, professionalism and experience. Physical professions are a noble field worthy of our support, promotion and encouragement.

To those who work tirelessly to improve the functionality of our bodies this post is for you. May we never underestimate your efforts in making life so much better.

For Ahkeem, the magic of your hands will be greatly missed by many. Thank you for your dedication, expertise and friendship.
