Hobbies and Wellbeing

As a health and performance coach my goal is to support individuals in finding more sustainable paths in all aspects of wellbeing. In the risk of sounding very “old school” I’d like to encourage 2022 to be the year of reviving your hobby.

The pandemic has taken a huge toll on our mental health and wellness. Our usual outlets and social connections have been put to the wayside. Finding diversions, leisure pursuits and ways to “step away” are all part and parcel of strategies to regain mental strength and resiliency.

While nutrition and fitness often take the bulk of the conversation, it’s maybe time to get creative. I often hear individuals say, oh I used to play the piano, or I used to be part of a bridge club and or I used to……. Let’s change the conversation with a look towards the future.

What is a hobby and why does this matter?

Hobby defined by Merriam-Webster

A pursuit outside one’s regular occupation engaged in especially for relaxation

There are so many avenues to explore if you are someone who likes being outdoors, such as building a small garden of plants and vegetables, joining a bird watching club, finding a recreational activity that lights your fire like pickle ball, tennis, golf, hiking or swimming. If you lean towards more inside events, find bridge or backgammon partners, learn to draw, paint or sculpt, or become an active member in a book club.

I know some individuals are still shy about getting back out socially but you can get creative in organizing something virtual. Recently a client expressed that she organized for her extended family a monthly Euchre game and it was a huge hit. We need these connections for our health and wellbeing on a regular basis.

Additionally, if one of your 2022 goals is to “give back” think about tutoring or mentoring another individual in something you are passionate about. Do you have skills in math, science or technology to teach either an individual, community association or senior living facility? Volunteer at a boys or girls club and share your talents in business or the arts.

The start of a new year invites the possibility to open alternative doors. Creating your own personal wellbeing plan for 2022 is best supported by nurturing all five pillars, physical, mental, emotional, social, and spiritual practices.

Whether your passion just needs to be rekindled or you’re interested in trying something new, our lives are richer when we fuel the creative side of life.

“I started painting as a hobby when I was little. I didn’t know I had any talent. I believe talent is just a pursued interest. Anybody can do what I do.”
